Pistons’ strong second half secures sixth consecutive win

At halftime of Sunday night’s matchup at Xfinity Mobile Arena, it appeared the Detroit Pistons’ five-game winning streak was in serious jeopardy. The Philadelphia 76ers controlled the first half with sharp ball movement, confident shooting, and high energy, while Detroit—despite being the better-rested team—struggled to match their intensity. But everything changed after the break. Behind a dominant second-half performance from Cade Cunningham, who scored 24 of his 26 points after halftime and threw down a highlight-reel dunk over former Piston Andre Drummond in the closing minutes, Detroit rallied for a thrilling 111-108 victory. The win extended their streak to six and gave the franchise its best season start in nearly two decades.

Cunningham’s leadership was on full display as he shrugged off a slow first half to completely take over the game. His 17-point explosion in the third quarter erased a 13-point deficit, setting the tone for Detroit’s comeback. The performance was another reminder of his evolution since his breakout All-Star campaign last year. Entering the game averaging over 30 points in four of the previous five contests, Cunningham once again showcased his poise and determination, leading the Pistons to their strongest 10-game start since 2005-06. Meanwhile, center Jalen Duren continued his breakout season, posting 21 points and 16 rebounds while anchoring Detroit’s third-ranked defense. His impact extended beyond scoring, as he added two steals, two blocks, and constant energy on both ends of the floor.

Both Cunningham and Duren have come a long way since enduring the franchise’s 14-68 season two years ago. Their growth reflects the Pistons’ resurgence under coach J.B. Bickerstaff, whose emphasis on defense, teamwork, and communication has transformed the team into an early-season contender. Duren’s dominance in the paint and Cunningham’s leadership have lifted Detroit to second place in the NBA standings, trailing only the defending champion Oklahoma City Thunder. Yet despite the early success, Cunningham remains grounded, crediting his belief in himself and the city’s resilience for the turnaround. “It’s still early,” he said. “We’re proud of what we’ve done, but we know we want something bigger. We just have to keep our heads down and keep working.”
