NBA Africa Invests in the Future of Basketball with Six Refurbished Courts Across the Continent

NBA Africa and the Basketball Africa League are expanding access to basketball through new and refurbished facilities in Senegal, Côte d'Ivoire, and Nigeria, creating more opportunities for young athletes and local communities.

Building the Future of African Basketball

Basketball continues to grow across Africa, and NBA Africa is taking another major step toward developing the next generation of talent.

In partnership with the Basketball Africa League (BAL), NBA Africa has announced an initiative involving six refurbished basketball courts across three African countries: Senegal, Côte d'Ivoire, and Nigeria.

The initiative is part of a larger commitment to build or renovate 1,000 basketball courts across Africa over the next decade, helping expand access to the sport for thousands of young people.

Beyond providing places to play, these facilities are designed to strengthen basketball development, encourage community participation, and create new opportunities for aspiring athletes.

Six Courts, Three Countries, One Mission

The six-court initiative includes facilities in several African communities, with projects being unveiled throughout the final months of 2026.

In Senegal, basketball facilities in Saint-Louis, Joal, Dakar, and Guédiawaye are part of the initiative.

Côte d'Ivoire is also benefiting from the investment, with a refurbished basketball court in Abidjan expected to serve nearly 3,000 players every week.

Meanwhile, Nigeria is scheduled to receive a refurbished basketball facility in Owerri, further expanding the sport's reach in West Africa.

Each location represents an opportunity for more young people to experience basketball in an environment that supports learning, competition, and personal development.

Creating More Opportunities for Girls in Basketball

One of the most important aspects of the initiative is its commitment to supporting girls and young women.

Through BAL4HER, the Basketball Africa League's platform dedicated to advancing gender equality in basketball, the organization is working to create more opportunities for female athletes.

In Abidjan, a basketball development program is expected to benefit approximately 300 girls aged 18 and under from eight schools.

Additional BAL4HER facilities are planned in Senegal and Nigeria, providing spaces for basketball activities, leadership development, and educational programming.

These investments represent an important step toward making basketball more accessible to young women throughout Africa.

More Than Basketball Courts

The development of basketball infrastructure has implications that extend beyond the game itself.

For many young athletes, access to quality basketball facilities can be a major obstacle to development. Without safe courts, organized competitions, and structured training opportunities, talented players may struggle to reach their potential.

By investing in local communities, NBA Africa and the BAL are helping address some of these challenges.

Improved facilities can provide young athletes with more opportunities to practice, compete, build confidence, and develop important life skills.

They can also create environments where coaches, schools, basketball organizations, and local communities work together to support the next generation.

Africa's Growing Basketball Movement

Africa has become an increasingly important part of the global basketball landscape.

The Basketball Africa League has helped raise the visibility of African club basketball, while African players continue to make an impact in professional leagues, universities, and international competitions.

However, the future of African basketball depends not only on professional opportunities but also on investments at the grassroots level.

Developing young talent requires access to facilities, experienced coaches, competitive environments, and opportunities to be discovered.

The six-court initiative is another example of how organizations are working to strengthen that foundation.

What This Means for the Next Generation

For aspiring basketball players across Africa, initiatives like this can represent much more than a renovated court.

They create spaces where young athletes can discover their passion for the game, improve their skills, and begin pursuing their basketball ambitions.

As more facilities become available, communities may also have greater opportunities to organize youth leagues, tournaments, training camps, and development programs.

These experiences can play an important role in preparing young athletes for higher levels of competition.

Scoutz Perspective: Talent Is Everywhere, Opportunity Should Be Too

At Scoutz, we believe basketball talent exists in every community, but opportunities are not always equally accessible.

The expansion of basketball infrastructure across Africa is an encouraging development for young athletes who dream of playing at the collegiate or professional level.

While better facilities are an important first step, athletes also need opportunities to showcase their abilities, receive evaluations, and connect with coaches and teams.

That is the mission behind Scoutz: helping athletes get rated, get matched, and get recruited.

As African basketball continues to develop, combining grassroots investment with modern recruiting technology can help create stronger pathways for the next generation of players.

The future of African basketball is being built one court, one community, and one opportunity at a time.
